DOCTRINE of signatures
The doctrine of signatures states that all of nature in it’s intricate design is a reflection of our inner nature.
At the root, the doctrine of signatures shows the intersection of theology, cosmology and biology. Our internal landscape consists of cellular communication, gravitational relationships and root to branch connectivity.
The natural biological expression of the world around us communicates through photosynthesis, underground fungal networks and seasonal perception.
Taking the time to closely observe nature can reveal clues about a plants healing properties. German mystic Jakob Bohme wrote in his 16th century manuscript The Signature of All Things, “Nature marks each growth according to its curative benefit.”
Nature provides an observable framework for understanding and realizing practical, spiritual and natural awakening. The doctrine of signatures gives us a framework for observing the energetic signature of plants. The shape, color, markings are all visual archetypes relating to an organ or bodily function.
For example, the bark of Du Zhong, eucommia ulmoides is fibrous and flexible. This bark is widely cultivated for its medicinal value of strengthening sinews (tendons/ligaments) and bones.
Ren Shen or Ginseng root appears as a human body, therefore is used to strengthen bodily constitution.
Walnuts or Huo Tao Ren resemble a brain and are associated with memory and cognition.
The energetic signature of plants are still apart of traditional herbalism today. The emergence of research on the phytochemistry of plants have given further acknowledgment of wisdom traditions with further evidence of specific biochemicals, flavonoids and phenolic compounds of plants.
Author and herbalist Sarah Pophm wrote, “Signatures in essence are pattern perceived by the heart.”
